Holocalls from Republic Intelligence handlers to get one of their guys out of a bad spot was something the crew of the Night Star had grown accustomed to. The pay was decent, and the rapport gained with the Republic made it easier to run other jobs without being accosted too much.
It was one such job, extracting a Republic operative from a delicate situation, that would set Cato on a path even he could not have predicted. The operative in question was, in fact, a Cathar Jedi knight named Usyn Ko. When that discovery was made, greed overtook the captain and the rest of the crew. The bounty offered by the Sith was far and away more than the promised payout for delivering the Jedi as planned. Cato, having spent some time speaking with the passenger, as well as his own belief in keeping his word, attempted a hasty one-man mutiny. It was, of course, a foolish decision…one that the Jedi had no qualms reminding him of frequently as he made use of both the Force and conventional means to treat Cato’s injuries while they drifted through space, the only two survivors onboard the Night Star.
In the following months it took to get Cato back onto his feet, and limp the damaged and undercrewed Night Star to its original destination of Dantooine, the two had numerous conversations ranging from their past endeavors and sights seen to philosophy and the topic of Cato’s innate Force sensitivity, something he had been unaware of prior to this point. This particular topic brought the suggestion that Cato consider joining the Order, a suggestion he refused, claiming that sort of life wasn’t for him.
Upon reaching Dantooine, the two parted company, Usyn Ko heading to meet the Jedi council, and Cato booking passage to Viscara to lay low…after all, the captain of the Night Star was well-connected, and not only killing him, but selling his ship was bound to attract…less than desirable attention
