[Game of 20 Questions] Jacen Starlancer

20 Questions
This is a variation of AEG’s 20 Questions used for character creation in their tabletop games of L5R and 7th Sea

  1. Where is your character from?
    Tralus, Corellian system

  2. How would you physically describe your character?
6’2", blonde, green eyes, fluxuating between thick stubble and full bearded, depending on when he feels like shaving. Trim build. He often wears a typical spacer’s outfit, and uses a light vest of body armor when the situation calls for it (which on Viscara is quite often).

  3. Does your character have recurring mannerisms?
    No

  4. What is your character’s main motevation?
He likes to make money, but more than that, he wants the freedom of living life on his own terms, going where he wants to go, doing what he wants to do. He wants the freedom to tell himself what is right and wrong, and live by his own code, not be preached at by society.

  5. What is your character’s greatest strength? greatest weakness?
Weakness: need to prove himself / Strength: He is very pro-active. He is always thinking about his next step before it’s time to take it.

  6. What are your character’s most and least favorite things?
Least: being trapped / most: Having nothing between him and the stars but a layer of transparisteel

  7. What about your character’s psychology?
He likes to play up the image of a scoundrel-bad boy, but underneath, he (often grudgingly) will usually follow his conscience. Deep down, he wants to do what’s right…well, what HE thinks is right. What he thinks isn’t always the same as what society thinks. He lives life by his own set of rules, and hates the idea of being thought of as a goody type.

  8. What is your character’s single greatest fear?
Being trapped in a small enclosed space. Jace is claustrophobic after an accident when he was a child that resulted in him being trapped in an off-limits collapsed building. He had gone exploring with some other kids and got separated when part of the floor above caved in. The rest of the kids ran off and left him and he wasn’t discovered for several hours when his brother went looking for him. Consequently, Jace always hero-worshipped his brother a little bit ever since.

  9. What are your character’s highest ambiitons, greatest love?
Jace loves his freedom. His biggest goal right now is to get his own ship. Nothing symbolizes freedom more to him than owning your own ship.

  10. What is your character’s opinion of where they are from?
It’s home, and the best system in the galaxy, with the best people, but he’s ready to see more of what’s out there.

  11. Does your character have any prejudices?
Jace grew up during the Mandalorian Wars and naturally has a strong dislike for Mandalorians. Also, with the Great Sith War having happened less than twenty years before he was born, and his recent run-in with the new sith empire before coming to Viscara, he is very strongly anti-sith.

  12. Where do your character’s loyalties lie?
His code, his crew, his friends and family

  13. Is your character in love. Are they married or betrothed?
    no, no, and no

  14. What about your character’s family?
His parents are still very much alive, back home in the Corellian sector.
Mother - Linara Toreos Starlancer, she is a xeno-archeologist from Chandrila who has been studying Centerpoint Station for most of her adult life. She specializes in unknown tech and reverse-engineering.
Father - Halocien Starlancer, he is a pilot from Coronet City working for a local space-lane company, mostly contracting out to private corporations for ferrying, escorts, and hauling within the Corellian Sector.
Parents - Linara and Hal met when Hal was assigned to ferry the xeno-archeologist back and forth between Centerpoint and Tralus where her research lab was based out of. The two hit it off early on and before long, Hal was volunteering whenever Linara needed transport. The two eventually wed and Hal moved to Tralus to be closer to Linara.
Brother - Jay-Taren Starlancer, KIA Jace’s older brother went off to serve with the Repoublic navy and two years after deployment, the Starlancers were informed of his death during a mission against the Mandalorians. Few details about the mission were given. Jay’s death had a big impact on Jace and was the main catalyst that drove him to leave Corellia and see the rest of the galaxy. It also further cemented his hatred for the Mandalorians.
Sister - Jaynara Starlancer, Jace left a younger sister behind back home on Tralus. She was still in her 10th term at the academy when he departed. The two were never very close. And though he did love her, he often found her annoying as older brothers do.

  15. How would your character’s parents describe them?
“The boy is a dreamer and idealist, but don’t ever tell HIM that. He likes being thought of as a punk for some reason. He could be so much more. Wish he’d come home.”

  16. Is your character from high society or the dregs of the underworld? Is he a gentleman or a scoundrel?
Jace grew up knowing luxury thanks to his mother’s expertise at back-engineering technology from Centerpoint Station. He attended many of his academy courses from Coronet City over the holonet, but in his 9th term, joined his brother on Corellia to attend in person. His brother graduated 2 years ahead of him and immediately went off to join the Republic Navy. Jace finished out his academy days on campus scoring moderately well, and after his own graduation, got an operations job in the orbital shipyards. By this time, he had already learned of his brother’s death and was mostly just going through the motions. He was not at the job for long before he had enough and decided he had to get out and see the rest of the galaxy. He started hanging out at spacer bars near the docking platforms and got the first ride out of system he could get. A hop-skip-and a jump later, Jace hooked up with a government-sanctioned smuggling crew that often ran kolto across Mandalorian lines. He took to the life like a fish to water. While he could have lived the gentleman’s life, Jace likes fitting into the scoundrel’s life. It allows him the freedom he loves and the opportunity to see the galaxy in both its grandeur and depravity. He always preferred getting the whole honest picture anyway.

  17. Is your character religeous?
He’s from the Corellian system, so the Celestials are a part of his upbringing, but he’s not devout. It’s not a major part of his life, more just a common belief. (Corellians believe the 5 inhabited planets of their main system were put there and populated by “the Celestials” This is evidenced millenia later by the discovery of planetary sized repulsors in all five planets and the presence of the Centerpoint Station between Talus and Tralus)

  18. Is your character a member of a guild, club, or secret society?
He used to be part of a crew on a ship that often took smuggling jobs for the Republic towards the end of the Mandalorian Wars. That crew was captured on a routine run after the end of the war by a patrol of fledgling Sith along the Shaltin Tunnels, an offshoot from the outer Perlemian Trade Route that strays dangerously close to Korriban. His captain ensured the crew was able to escape, but at the cost of being captured himself. Jace never saw his captain again and so struck out on his own and wound up on Viscara where he started his own crew, the Shadowlancers, who are now in the market for a ship of their own.

  19. What does your character think of the force?
Seems to come with a lot of trouble. Most the jedi he’s heard of or seen on the holonet news, save the Revanchist, all seem like hypocrites and the cause of much of their own problems, while the sith are just outrightly evil megalomaniacs. Sith are worse, but jedi aren’t great either. Grey Jedi he’s heard about since coming to Viscara seem like they’re more focused on separating themselves from regular jedi than actually persuing their own path. In all, the force seems to Jace something that isn’t worth the trouble.

  20. If you could, what advice would you give your character?
Don’t be so concerned with proving yourself. Just follow your gut and be careful not to overextend yourself. You’ll only get in over your head.

Essentially, Jace is a cross between Han Solo, Mal Renolds, and Atton Rand

***DM’s are welcome to use any characters of Jace’s background to further his story or the plot of the server, except for his sister. I’m reserving her as a player-character for myself or another player. If someone is interested in playing her, please DM me on discord
