"What’s my story? Nothing much to tell. I’ve had it good and I’ve had it bad, like most people. Stepped into a few unlucky situations, but so far I’ve been able to dodge everything life has thrown at me. These past ten years have been rough and I sometimes feel like my luck won’t last forever. At the same time, I’ve no desire to bust my ass for only a handful of credits." -Griggs, when asked about his history
A very resourceful and lucky person, Griggs is a survivor - he always seems to live to fight another day. Part of that is thanks to his two talents: staying subtle and remaining useful. For the most part, he seems to be a pleasant wanderer, rarely impacted by those around him. Suffering hardships after the loss of his family and home drove him to become a loner, believing that a man is safest when self-sufficient. Despite all of this, he managed to establish a promising career as a space engineer and continues to work his trade from one crew to another, looking for any kind of jobs that he can get a hold of.
He was born in the medical bay of a freighter in a colonial starfleet destined to push beyond the fringes of known space. His father, Damaran Vallar, was an engineer, passing down his knowledge to his son which later blossomed into a full apprenticeship when Gregory came of age. The engineering trade was a family tradition for the Vallars, with the fleet owing much of its longevity to the genius of the men and women that worked to keep the starships in top shape. His old lifestyle came to an abrupt end when a massive fleet of pirates came across the fleet. The colonists fought long and hard, but they were outmanned and outgunned by the superior firepower that the pirates were equipped with. The survivors were scattered, fleeing to any safe corner of space while the unlucky were forced to embark on emergency landing pods that took them to the nearby planet. Gregory was unfortunately, one of them.
It was a struggle for survival on the planet surface as the colonists sent out distress signals to any ships willing to answer. Miraculously, scavengers that hoped to pick apart the starship carcasses caught wind of the signals and took the survivors aboard. In return for saving them, they worked as part of the crew until they could find a new home somewhere else in civilized space. For ten whole years, Griggs worked under grueling conditions as he hitchhiked from one starship crew to another, plying his trade as a engineer to keep himself from starving. Life was hard for blue collar workers, especially those in space.
Recently however, his fate took a mysterious turn as he was hired onto the crew of a freighter destined for Veles, a backwater colony on the planet of Vishara. Little did the man know that this journey was going to be the one that changed everything…
