To master Jar'Kai

A familiar figure enters the Temple grounds, her hooded mask bows its head respectfully to the Temple guards as she makes her way to her normal position. Her training foils coming to her hands after she lays the holopad on the ground, but instead of Makashi, she loads up a new datadisk, a female teacher appearing before her bowing her head

(Teacher) Welcome students. Today we will discuss the fundamentals, and some basic attacks. Though we will start with a brief history to help you understand why this form is so important.

This timely lightsaber technique of employing two sabers at once can be traced back long ago to the planet of Atrisia. The dual saber technique was the product Yovshin Swordsmen. They named the saber technique after the city in which their dueling sabers were crafted, jar’kai. The blades forged by these swordsmen were crafted with explicit intent to be dual wielded. Elsewhere in the galaxy, the Royal Royale Macheteros of the Kashi Mer had developed their own dual blade style. The style was named niman. A dark cult by the name of the Legions of Lettow would employ this dual blade form against the early jedi order. The Jedi Order would later adapt the combat form into their ranks, along with jar’kai.

Both forms predated the use of sabers, however they were easily adapted to saber combat. The jedi chose to adopt the word jar’kai as a blanket term for all dual blade combat. Jar’kai was not seen as the jedi or sith a form, rather it was a technique employed in combat.

The woman tilts her head as she listens, curiously but attentive to the education of the lesson

(Teacher) With all that said, now to understand the uses of Jar’kai.

The dual saber Jar’Kai permitted a Jedi to fight with two lightsabers, one in each hand. One of the blades in the wielder’s hands was used for attacking while the other one was used for defending, such as parrying, or for more offensive power. Many Jedi train to use one of the single lightsaber forms in the hopes of gaining a basic knowledge of the dual-bladed attack, but very few Jedi ever totally mastered Jar’Kai. Jar’Kai is often combined with one of the seven Forms of Lightsaber combat to make it more effective. Jar’kai often involves a certain degree of ataru skill, but not in deep detail. Form VI is useful for developing Jar’Kai as it gives you basic knowledge of all forms to use wit Jar’Kai.

Having two lightsabers offers you the advantage, as your opponent must concentrate on two lightsabers which can attack from different angles, where a double bladed lightsaber is more predictable due to its lack of versatility.

Nods again as she considers the lesson, and how she might combine them with her Saber pike. Listening as the teacher moves forward

(Teacher) Today we will start off simple, focusing only on the left handed attacks. While we will be using both blades, the prime focus will be on attacks of the Left hand directly. Draws out twin blue lightsaber and nods Let us begin.

takes a breath and nods as she takes powers on both of her own foils and watches attentively

(Teacher) Alright now, form one. Slice at your opponents chest with the blade horizontal showing the attack easily which is very basic while keeping the other lightsaber up in place

*nods and copies the attack, keeping her blade in place and doing so three more times.

(Teacher) Alright, moving on. Form two. Sing the saber round low from right to left, slicing at both legs. Blade at an angle.

Moves through the form, copying her display, taking a bit of work to get the angle of the blade proper as she showed, then doing it again a few more times to get the feel of it.

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form three. Slice at the right leg, taking the blade from left to right. shows the form calmly with ease

nodding she makes the slice with ease, this being far more simple, though still repeating it the three times

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form four. Swipe the left saber horizontally from right to left, then swipe your right saber horizontally from right to left. makes a display of the movements more slowly so any student could see the form in action

Hmm. nods and moves through the forms slowly, making the strikes as directed before doing them another three times

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form five. Swipe the left saber horizontally from right to left, then slice vertically upwards with the right saber. Again going through the motions, guiding the movements from a place of calm peace

follows through, moving through the forms as she follows the example, semi glad these are not as complicated as Makashi so far

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form six. This ones a bit more challenging. Put the sabers in an X shape and lunge at your enemy. Then bring the blades across each other in a scissor motion. You can also do single lunges with the strong hand.

Sighs at the sudden change in difficulty as she works to complete the move, falling twice before managing to get it mostly right, only doing it right on the final of the three added attempts

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form seven. Bring the saber over your head and bring down vertically onto your opponents head.

sighs in relief with the easier move, following the movement more simply, copying it three times before she moves on again

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form eight. Bring the saber slicing upwards from bottom to top. going through the motion easily

copies her form, working to keep her body properly angled as she does so

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form nine. Bring the saber over your left shoulder, then bring it down from top left to the bottom right, slashing at your opponents right arm.

follows this more simple strike, keeping the other in line as expected as she goes through the attack

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form ten. Bring the saber over your right shoulder, then bring it down from top right to the bottom left, slashing at your opponents left arm. Same as the last, just on the other arm.

nods and follows through on the other arm. Striking with ease.

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form eleven. Bring the saber behind the the left side of your body, then bring the lightsaber down horizontally on your opponents left leg. Swing the saber from right to left. showing it as she describes it

Follows the routine, watching her a bit more closely to ensure she gets the form right, nearly stumbling twice before making a better stance to complete it, doing it another three times

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form twelve. Bring the saber round horizontally, slicing from left to right.

does this far more easily, since its a rather simple move

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on. Form thirteen. Another more tricky technique. Bring both the right and the left saber attacking the right side of your opponents body, the sabers should be about 1 foot apart and be horizontal. demonstrating the more advanced technique slowly a few times before encouraging the student to try

This takes several attempts, the recording seeming to delay here for the harder attack. Finally completing it after around a dozen attempts she takes a breath and nods That one was much harder…

(Teacher) Alright now, moving on, todays final lesson. Form fourteen. Bring both the right and the left saber attacking the left side of your opponents body, the sabers should be about 1 foot apart and be horizontal. Again demonstrating it for the opposite side of the body

groans at that but takes a breath and takes a few more shots at the opposite side, still hard but managing to do it a bit easier having learned more from thirteen

(Teacher) That completes todays lesson on the left handed techniques of Jar’kai, take time to study these forms and practice them. Most are simple though some are rather difficult. With patience and practice I am sure you will do well. When you are ready, you make start the next lesson. May the force be with you until then. the holopad shutting off

sighs as she begins working on her training, especially the forms she truly struggled with, spending another three hours going over every video, clip and demonstration for hours, practicing and refining the attacks as she focuses on it

The rain falls around the robed figure as she stands in her usual spot, she had been here for days, since the attack by Tran on Corbin. Ever practicing Makashi and now Jar’kai as well as she focused. Taking a breath she set out the holopad and looked up as she activated it, showing the female teacher once more before taking the entry stance of Jar’kai

(Teacher) Welcome students to the second lesson of Jar’kai. Today we will study the right handed attacks of Jar’kai, as with the initial lesson, the attacks can use both blades, though we are mostly focused on the right. So lets get right into it. Drawing out and activating her lightsaber Form one. Bring the saber behind the left side of your head and swing round horizontally from left to right, attacking the head.Showing the move in a calm pace as she displays the movements

nods as she takes a breath bringing the right saber up to the left side of her head and bringing it round horizontally from left to right against an invisible opponents head, repeating this a few times

(Teacher) Moving on, form two. Bring the saber slashing round horizontally from right to left to attack the head.

Nods as it seems fairly similar to the first as she does it with relative ease

(Teacher) Moving on, form three. Bring the saber round behind your left arm and slash round from left to right attacking the right arm. Giving a display slowly as she speaks

Focusing and taking a bit of time to get this right, the form a bit more sloppy the first few attempts, getting a bit better with a few more tries

(Teacher) Moving on, form four. Swipe the left saber horizontally from right to left, then swipe your right saber horizontally from right to left.

A more simple attack, she does this quickly with ease, nodding in approval at how easily this one comes

(Teacher) Moving on, form five. Swipe the left saber horizontally from right to left, then slice vertically upwards with the right saber. A brief yet simple display

Follows the movements, finding these initial attacks easy, though suspecting it will get harder

(Teacher) Moving on, form six. Put the sabers in an X shape and lunge at your enemy. Then bring the blades across each other in a scissor motion. You can also do single lunges with the strong hand. Displaying each part as she explains it

Remembers this one from the last one, doing much better this time in doing it proudly

(Teacher) Moving on, form seven. Bring the lightsaber down horizontally on your opponents left leg. Swing the saber from right to left.

Realizing these are basically the same as the last lesson, just on the opposite hand, she relaxes a bit following through

(Teacher) Moving on, form eight. Bring the saber behind the the left side of your body, then bring the saber round horizontally, slicing from left to right. Another example of the attack, moving relatively slowly

Follows through the attack, keeping an even pace as she nods to herself in thought

(Teacher) Moving on, form nine. Bring the saber over your left shoulder, then bring it down from top left to the bottom right, slashing at your opponents right arm. another example with calm ease

Moves through the motion, almost keeping pace with the teacher now, her training for the other hand showing through

(Teacher) Moving on, form ten. Bring the saber over your right shoulder, then bring it down from top right to the bottom left, slashing at your opponents left arm.

Does the move with ease, copying from the last just on opposite sides

(Teacher) Moving on, form eleven. Bring the saber over your head and bring down vertically onto your opponents head.

Makes the strike with precision and focus. Not arrogant, just fairly sure of herself

(Teacher) Moving on, form twelve. Bring the saber slicing upwards from bottom to top.

nods as she does this practicing a few times before it moves on

(Teacher) Moving on, form thirteen. Bring both the right and the left saber attacking the right side of your opponents body, the sabers should be about 1 foot apart and be horizontal.

Nods remembering this and does it fairly easily now. preprepping for the opposite side in expectation

(Teacher) Moving on to our final form for this lesson, form fourteen. Bring both the right and the left saber attacking the left side of your opponents body, the sabers should be about 1 foot apart and be horizontal.

nods as it followed her expectation and completes the set with ease.

(Teacher) That concludes this lesson, our next lesson will begin focusing on the defensive forms of Jar’kai. Though I will cover both hands in one lesson. Though still individually. Remember to practice and meditate on the lessons. May the force be with you until then.

The holopad turns off once more as she leans down to pick it up, stowing away her blades. An approving nod at how much better this lesson went, and some eagerness within for the next lesson, but for now, she had promised to meet with Corbin. Later she would continue her practice

The Initiate is seen coming in seeming annoyed even in her mask, she heads behind the temple rather then the usual front or side, drawing her saberstaff foil and beginning to work her anger through her saberstaff. Her movements intense and powerful, striking her invisible opponent again and again with Jar’kai attacks. Though now incorporating them into the Saberstaff rather then two blades. Whatever she is angry about she plays out in this, striking, twisting, starting to go between Makashi and Jar’kai, incorporating them into one another

After thirty minutes of constant strikes, her breathing hard and labored does she stop, her anger played out as she wheezes from the effort, though not removing the mask or hood, kneeling in the grass she works to slow her breathing, her heart racing as she tries to gain control back. Eyes close as she takes three breathes, each one more slow then the last as she slowly allows herself to sink into meditation

A fresh day, the rain coating the grass and bringing with it new life. The Initiate walks into the grounds bowing her head respectfully to the Guards and takes her common spot. Gone was her stress from the day before, and with it a new vigor to continue her training. Setting the holopad on the grass she activates it seeing the familiar woman appearing in the hologram and ignites her blades. Ready and willing to learn

(Teacher) Hello students. Today we will study the defensive forms of Jar’kai. Though before we delve into it, I wish to discuss the most important form a Jedi will ever learn, and hopefully master. Form Zero.

Tilts her head at this, listening curiously

(Teacher) The art of Form Zero lies in a lightsaber that has not been ignited. A Jedi cannot protect and serve the galaxy in the Jedi way if he/she does not know when to draw his/her sword and when to resort to different means of solving a problem. Form Zero, unlike most other forms, does not teach a Jedi how to use a lightsaber, but when to use one. The knowledge, understanding, and wisdom behind the idea of right and wrong encompasses the idea that a Jedi who feels the necessity to use Form Zero, the absence of violence, is truly gifted in the ways of the Force.

Considers her words slowly, nodding as she takes a breath looking to her two blades taking a breath once more as she refocuses

(Teacher) That said, lets begin todays lesson, today we will cover the defensive forms of Jar’kai starting with the left and before moving to the right as a focus. Draws out her lightsaber and activates it, looking back to the camera Form one. Put the sabers in an X shape above your head. doing the basic display with ease

Nods making the shape of the x over her head, not really a hard one

(Teacher) Moving on, form two. Hold the saber vertical, with your arm at a right angle at the elbow. Making a show of the way to hold the saber and how to hold the elbow

Adjusts her stance to match that of the teachers. Taking the defensive stand and nods

(Teacher) Moving on, form three. Hold the saber horizontally over your head. again the simple gestures

Nods and does so with ease, not overly complicated moves.

(Teacher) Moving on, form four. Hold the saber down so it is pointing down, protecting the leg. The saber should be at an angle. Shows this carefully, so that the students can see how the blade angles

Considers the defensive posture and steps into the defensive posture, feeling how it adds to her defense

(Teacher) Moving on, form five. Bring the saber across the front of your body so the saber is pointing down to the bottom right, protecting your right leg. The handle should be near your groin. again the display, holding the handle in position though more angled for students to see, then back to normal so they can see it standing proper

Takes a moment to get the stance correct, though seems pleased with the outcome as she nods to herself

(Teacher) Moving on, form six. Put your arm behind your back so the handle is at the base of the spine, with the blade pointing vertically upwards. Again showing the stance and how to hold the blade

nods taking the stance, holding it, then repeating it a few times to feel it in action

(Teacher) Moving on, form seven. Put the saber over your shoulder so the blade is vertical pointing down. Taking the pose with calm ease

Nods as she repeats the gesture with simple movements

(Teacher) Moving on, form eight. Put the sabers in an X shape on your left side, to protect your arm. Displaying with ease

nods and copies with the same ease

(Teacher) Moving on, form nine. Put the sabers in an X shape on your right side, to protect your arm. Again the display

Repeats the former move on her right side

(Teacher) Moving on, form ten. Put the left saber over your left shoulder and the right saber over the right shoulder in order to form an X shape behind your back. giving the visual display with ease

follows this easily with no hardship

(Teacher) Moving on, form eleven. Put the left saber under your left shoulder and the right saber under the right shoulder in order to form an X shape behind your back, with the handles near your hips. giving the display which seems fairly easy

Nods and completes it as well with an approving nod

(Teacher) Very good, now we move onto the right hand as dominant, though the techniques are exactly the same, so lets go through them again. Form one.

Taking the defensive stand and nods

nods and copies with the same ease

(Teacher) Moving on, form nine. Put the sabers in an X shape on your right side, to protect your arm. Again the display

Repeats the former move on her right side

(Teacher) Moving on, form ten. Put the left saber over your left shoulder and the right saber over the right shoulder in order to form an X shape behind your back. giving the visual display with ease

follows this easily with no hardship

Nods and completes it as well with an approving nod

(Teacher) That concludes the lessons of Jar’kai. Remember to study them closely and practice often. May the force be with you. the datadisk turns off once more

Nods as she takes up the datadisk and considers the lessons, how connected they all felt and began slowly going back over the lessons, preparing for the much longer lessons yet to come
