To master Sokan

For now she spends hours practicing high and low ground, mixing the attacks in carefully, working with an invisible opponent for well over an hour. Before moving to meditate on the lessons today, focusing and considering all she had learned

A period of boredom escapes her as she gets up and moves from the other Jedi, she had set it aside three days ago after asking for it and was only now getting back to it, so much worried her mind right now, would she be expelled, would she be removed from her training as a Temple Guard, the others couldn’t understand how much this scared her, and Corbins denial of even remembering how important she made that statement that night, actually hurt a lot that he remembered arguing over drinks with River, over something that would get her in serious trouble. Perhaps she hadn’t been that important to him, for now all she could do as train and try and forget…just for a while…

(Teacher) appears as the datadisk is turned on, lightsaber already active as they stand at the ready Welcome, if you have turned on this device then your Master believes you are ready to study Sokan. So let us first dive into the meaning and reasoning for Sokan. Sokan combines tactics that allow for evasion and mobility, with kinetic movements from Form IV. Sokan involves swift movements of the lightsaber aimed at the vital body zones, while doing rolls and other acrobatic techniques. Users of Sokan also had knowledge of terrain and will use it to their advantage.

nods as she listens, attentive to the meanings and uses, though takes a breath as she prepares

(Teacher) Now then, let us start with the basic forms of attack. Form one. Hold the lightsaber with both hands so it is horizontal. Bring it up behind you so the blade is level with your shoulders. Then swing the lightsaber round so that is makes contact with your opponents upper arm. gives a very simple demonstration Though beware that this may leave you open to attacks if you are unprepared.

Having done this one with her Mentor, she easily goes through it, retaking position once more

(Teacher) On to form two. This move should only be done when the
opportunity presents itself. The best way to attack someone’s legs is to attack high a lot and make your opponent think that you always attack the top, then after a lot of high attacks suddenly slash low at his legs. Another demonstration

Easily follows having done this one as well, making it a very simple lesson

(Teacher) On to form three. This is a one handed move, simply slash at your opponents arm keeping the saber horizontal. goes through the motion calmly

takes the stance and makes the slash, finding these rather easy

(Teacher) Remember that you should also learn another Form as well and learn the basic attack moves for that so that they can compliment this form and prevent you from being overly predictable. Now then. Sabers away, the rest of this will not require your saber.

Head tilts as she turns off her foil, clipping it to her belt.

(Teacher) Now we will discuss terrain advantage. Every Jedi should know and understand these. In using them to our advantage we can quickly end a fight before it begins. Now let us begin.

nods attentively, listening as she sits down

(Teacher) First we will start with the High ground. High Ground offers an advantage to the one who is higher, it is difficult for the lower person to get higher than the high person. It is more difficult getting up to a higher level than to get down to a lower level, and it is difficult to fight an opponent higher than you. Try and get and hold any high ground you can as it will give you an advantage. Remember that even with an advantage, you can still loose. If you can you could start a landslide from the top which could injure your opponent enough to render him unable to fight.

nods as she considers this, attentive and very interested in the lecture about the different types of terrain

(Teacher) This is known as Under cover. You can use terrain to hide and launch surprise attacks on your attacker. Anything from behind trees and under bushes to behind a wall next to a gate, if you can launch a surprise attack on your opponent then you will have a momentary advantage, and you could possibly win the fight if you catch the opponent off guard.

Huh, yeah that would be very useful, off guard they would have to refocus and try to get their guard up at the same time…nods

(Teacher) Next is Balance. If you have got skill at balancing well then you could try fighting along thick pipes, on rocks in the
middle or rivers or anything else like that. Your goal here is to try and knock your opponent off due to lack of balance. The key to balancing is to think that you are on normal ground. Do not think about balancing, just be aware of your surroundings so you don’t fall.

Yeah that one would be much harder…and likely a lot of patience I need to work at. chuckles to herself

(Teacher) The final one for this lesson is Stairs. Dueling up and down stairs is difficult for both, but especially so for him on the defense as he has to walk up or down the stairs backward, one misjudges step could cost him his life! Try and use stairs to gain an advantage over your opponent, by attacking him. If you can try and merge this tactic with the high ground tactics, forcing him down the stairs rather than up, giving you even more of an advantage. Practice moving backwards up and down stairs, but be careful!

Yikes, yeah I have fallen down the stairs a few times…thats very painful!

(Teacher) While that does conclude this lesson, take time to practice these techniques and lessons on the high and low ground, on stairs if you can, using cover. Practice these and know that when using them, your enemy is likely using them just as much. Practice hard and they may save your life. May the force be with you. Bows his head before turning off

Gets up with a breath, not as long a lesson as some of the others, but just as insightful and meaningful as the rest. Taking to the ramp where Master Koll was, she quickly reassured the two guards that she would not be going above the ramp, but simply practicing on it. Knowing as she practiced, they were watching, minding her even if she meant no harm, and Master Koll could easily protect himself. Though it meant Master Koll was watching too. Practicing hard she mixed Makashi, Jar’kaii, Shii-cho and Soresu techniques in, keeping every moment fluid and moving, focusing outwards as if fighting an opponent. Sometimes stumbling at the differences in elevations, practicing on high or low ground though never giving in. This goes on for hours, till she is out of breath and tired, though she doesn’t rest, simply putting away the foil and sitting at the fire once again…to wait.
